"Between Civilization and Culture" (2018)
This is a documentary of life in the small village of Mount Liebig in the central desert of Australia, where I lived alongside my Aboriginal friends. The Aboriginal people have endured persecution and massacre for a long time, but in recent years, the government has changed its stance and started providing assistance and support. As a result, items like cola and potato chips suddenly appeared in their traditional hunting and gathering lifestyle.
The photos depict scenes of generations continuing their tradition of hunting caterpillars, taking breaks to eat snacks like kangaroo tails. This unexpected blend may seem peculiar due to the absence of anticipated stages, yet it portrays the coexistence of lifestyles believed to be incompatible: culture and civilized living. This is not about superiority or inferiority but rather about symbiosis.
